A capsule looks small. But multiply it by the coffee of every morning, every working day and every household. Suddenly the material around it becomes just as relevant as what's inside it. Wageningen's research into coffee capsules and circularity makes that difference concrete: it isn't the logo on the capsule, but material, collection and processing that determine how circular a system really is.
For people who choose the convenience of capsules, that's good news. The question doesn't have to be: capsule or no capsule? The better question is: what happens to the capsule after the espresso is brewed?
What Wageningen actually studied
In 2023, Wageningen University & Research published a comparison of coffee capsules on circularity. The study looked at compostable capsules, aluminium capsules and conventional plastic capsules. It considered not only the raw material, but the full route: production, use, collection and what remains of the material after disposal.
The outcome is clear, with one condition that's often skipped. Compostable capsules come out at around 100% circularity when they are actually composted. Aluminium reaches around 48% on average. Conventional plastic capsules come out at around 23%.
Those percentages come from the Material Circularity Indicator, a method that, in plain language, tries to answer one question: how much of the materials used stays usable instead of being lost for good? So a higher score doesn't automatically mean every single cup of coffee is problem-free. It does show which system has the most potential when the waste route is right.

Why the material alone isn't enough
Aluminium is often seen as an obvious circular choice, because it's easy to recycle. In theory that's true. In practice, recycling needs a capsule that's collected separately, comes back into the chain, gets sorted and can be processed cleanly enough. A capsule that ends up in general waste doesn't get that second round on its own.
Plastic, too, has a gap between what's technically possible and what happens at home. Recycling routes exist, but small capsules filled with coffee residue are hard to sort. The result depends on local waste streams, infrastructure and behaviour. That's why Wageningen's score for conventional plastic comes out so low.
Compostable capsules take a different route. Their value isn't in endlessly melting them down again, but in composting: under the right conditions the material can break down as organic matter. That makes the use phase simpler, provided the capsule ends up in the right bin and the municipality accepts that stream.
So circularity isn't a label. It's a system.
Wageningen research on coffee capsules: the crucial condition
The most striking outcome of Wageningen's research into coffee capsules and circularity is also the most practical: a compostable capsule only scores that high if it's actually composted. Throw it in with general waste and you don't use that route at all.
In the Netherlands, fully compostable capsules may in principle go in the organic waste (GFT) bin. But municipalities don't all apply the same acceptance rules for coffee capsules. Some processors are cautious, for example because they can't easily tell capsules apart from aluminium or plastic versions. So always check your own municipality's waste guide before you settle into a fixed routine.
That sounds less romantic than a big green statement. But it's what a credible choice looks like. Material innovation only works at full strength when the final action at home plays along.
What does this mean for your daily ritual?
When you choose capsules, look beyond the packaging or a generic recycling claim. Three questions are more relevant: what is the capsule made of, does it fit your machine and which waste route is available locally?
Machine compatibility matters, because a more sustainable alternative only has an effect when it fits into your existing routine without a detour. A capsule that stays in the drawer or requires a new device loses much of its practical benefit. Compostable isn't the same as carefree
The word compostable is sometimes used as if it means something disappears anywhere and under any conditions on its own. That's not how it works. Composting is a controlled process with time, temperature, oxygen and professional processing. A capsule on the street, in nature or on a random compost heap doesn't belong there.
Home composting is also something other than the GFT chain. A product can be suitable for industrial composting and still not break down reliably in a small compost bin in the garden. That's why the municipal GFT route is the relevant one for capsules designed for it - but only when your municipality accepts them.
That distinction isn't a detail for a label. It prevents disappointment and keeps good materials out of the wrong stream. Circularity gets stronger when the message is as precise as the product.
The real comparison: system against system
The capsule market ran for a long time on one idea: convenience is separate from material. Wageningen shows that assumption no longer holds. The difference between around 23% for conventional plastic, around 48% for aluminium and around 100% for compostable material when it's actually composted is too big to treat as a footnote.
At the same time, aluminium isn't worthless and compostable isn't automatically the best choice in every situation. Available collection, the local GFT rules and consistent use decide the outcome. Someone with access to a well-functioning return stream for aluminium makes a different call than someone without that option. Someone living in a municipality where compostable capsules are accepted in GFT has a direct route that asks for few extra steps.
That's exactly why transparency beats absolute language. Not pretending one material solves every question, but making clear which conditions are needed to deliver the promised impact.
A small choice with a fixed place at home
Coffee is rarely a one-off purchase. It's a habit. And habits are exactly where circular design makes a difference: not by turning people into waste experts, but by making a better option fit within what they already do.
So look at the capsule after brewing. Not as an afterthought, but as part of the coffee you choose. Check your municipal waste guide, pick a material whose route you understand and make that route part of your morning. Don't just drink. Think.
