A capsule is small. The material choice behind it is not. Anyone weighing up aluminium or biobased capsules usually looks at waste first. Fair enough. But how a capsule is produced, used, collected and processed matters just as much. And of course you want your espresso to simply work on a busy Tuesday morning.

For years the capsule market barely changed. Convenience was the standard, material an afterthought. It doesn't have to stay that way. Below you'll read what really sets aluminium and biobased capsules apart - without inflated claims, but with the practical questions that count.

Aluminium or biobased capsules: the material difference

Aluminium capsules are made of metal. That material protects coffee well against light, oxygen and moisture, and it can be reused when it is correctly collected and recycled. And there's the nuance straight away: recycling is not an automatic property of a capsule. It depends on collection, sorting and processing.

Biobased capsules are a broader category. Some are made from plant-based raw materials, others combine biobased materials with various coatings or filters. So the word biobased on its own doesn't tell you enough. Always look at the full composition and at the waste route the manufacturer prescribes.

The Q Drinks capsule is made of coffee - coffee chaff - with an organic, biobased binder. That gives the capsule its shape and strength. So it isn't a capsule of coffee alone, nor a story where the material is tucked away behind a green label. The composition has to match what you can actually do at home, in your machine and in the waste bin.

The real question is: what happens after your coffee?

An aluminium capsule can keep its value, but only if it ends up in the right stream. Coffee residue, small formats and the need for separate collection make that harder than the word recyclable suggests. So if you use aluminium, you have to be willing to hand the capsules in separately and consistently, via the route available to you.

With compostable capsules the question shifts. Not: can this material ever be processed? But: does my municipality accept it in the organic waste bin? In the Netherlands, fully compostable capsules are suitable for the organic (GFT) stream, but not every municipality accepts coffee capsules yet. So always check your local waste guide. That isn't a detail - it's the difference between a good idea and good practice.

Wageningen University & Research made this difference visible in 2023 in a comparison of capsule materials. When a compostable capsule is actually composted, it scores around 100% on circularity. Aluminium comes out at roughly 48%, with 61% as a best case. Conventional plastic capsules sit around 23%. Those figures are no licence to throw things away thoughtlessly. But they do show how heavily the chosen waste route weighs in.

Taste and freshness: material isn't the whole story

Aluminium has a strong reputation as a barrier against oxygen. That makes sense: after roasting, coffee gradually loses aroma and character through contact with air. But a good capsule is about more than the wall. The roast, grind, amount of coffee, sealing and time between production and use together decide what ends up in your cup.

That's why “aluminium tastes better” is too blunt. A poorly tuned aluminium capsule doesn't suddenly become interesting because of the metal. Equally, a biobased capsule has to be technically precise enough: stable under pressure, well sealed and consistent in extraction.

For capsule coffee that consistency is decisive. With an espresso there's little room to hide an uneven extraction. You want a clear body, a fitting intensity and crema that suits the blend - not a capsule that's only clever on paper. So don't choose between material and taste. Demand both.

Machine compatibility is a hard limit

A capsule that doesn't fit well isn't an alternative, it's frustration. Especially if you already own a Nespresso Original machine, you want to know whether the format, the rim and the pressure build-up are right. Being compatible means more than the capsule dropping into the holder. It has to pierce, flow through and eject reliably.

There's a technical challenge in that for new materials. Metal is thin and predictable to shape. A capsule made largely of coffee needs a different approach to deliver the same everyday reliability. That's exactly why material innovation isn't only about packaging. It's also about engineering.

So test a new capsule the way you actually use it. Make an espresso, a lungo and, if that's your ritual, a cappuccino. Watch the flow time, the sound of the machine, any leakage and the taste in milk. A capsule doesn't have to be identical to what you're used to, but it does have to perform consistently.

When aluminium can make sense

Aluminium is a defensible choice when you use a reliable collection route and actually follow it. For offices or households where capsules are collected and handed in separately, that system can fit well. The material is also sturdy, light and long established in production processes.

The flip side is a dependence on behaviour and infrastructure. If capsules disappear into the general waste bin, most of the recycling advantage disappears with them. Recycling asks for cooperation after the coffee moment. That's not a bad thing, but it is a condition that should be named honestly.

When biobased capsules fit better

Biobased capsules suit people who want to bring material and end of life closer together. Especially if your municipality accepts compostable capsules in the organic bin, the route is clear: drink coffee, separate the waste locally, done.

Here too: biobased isn't automatically better in every situation. The capsule has to be demonstrably suitable for the available processing, and you have to follow the local rules. Don't toss a compostable capsule into the organic bin on the off chance if your municipality still excludes that stream. That isn't a matter of principle, it's simply handling waste with care.

A second difference is feel. Aluminium is a technical, industrial material. A capsule that is made mostly of coffee makes it visible that the category can think differently about raw materials. Not as a decorative sustainability story, but as a concrete design decision.

Look beyond the word compostable

Compostable sounds clear, but the context sets the value. Ask whether the capsule is suitable for industrial composting, whether it's allowed in the Dutch organic (GFT) stream, and which municipal exceptions apply. Ask too what happens to the coffee inside the capsule. Clear answers are usually a better sign than big promises.

Do the same with aluminium. Where do you hand the capsules in? Do you have to empty them? Are they collected locally or do you have to gather and return them? If a system asks for extra steps, that's fine - as long as those steps fit how you really live.

The best choice isn't the capsule with the loudest claim. It's the capsule whose material, machine and waste route line up with your daily behaviour. A system you use consistently beats a system that's strong in theory but stays on the shelf in practice.

A capsule may ask more of the category

Capsule coffee doesn't have to choose between speed, taste and material awareness. The bar can go higher: compatible with Nespresso* Original, clear about ingredients, good to use and honest about what's needed after use.

Start small. Check your municipal organic-waste rules, see which capsules fit your machine and choose a flavour profile you'll still enjoy three weeks from now. That's how an everyday coffee moment becomes a choice that matches how you want to live, work and consume.
